ArcGIS Desktop and 64-bit oracle installation

Hi,

As my OS is windows 64-bit, and I need to install 64-bit oracle to support one of my other app,
I realised that I won't be able to establish ODBC connection to my oracle database using my 64-bit oracle.

It was able to work prior with 32-bit oracle.

Understand that ArcGIS desktop is a 32-bit application, but are there any workarounds for me to have database connection in ArcGIS?

Can one install 2 oracle client in the same machine - i.e. one 32-bit and the other 64-bit? and set my path to 2 directories?
Is this workable?

Thanks
Grace

Licenses and machine improvements

Hi everyone,

Maybe someone knows about this.

We recently informed our users about the process of upgrading from ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 to 10.1 and while telling them about the license authorization process they asked us about the linkage between the license and the machine/server where it is installed in. This question arose because some years ago (actually a bunch of years ago) we had problems with the licenses for a CAD program and a RAM upgrade. Right after the memory upgrade that program's licenses were not any more recognized as good and active. We even had problems with the installation of higher speed CD-ROM drives. Our CAD licenses would not work anymore either.

So I'm sure things have changed quite a lot from that time now, and the license-machine linkage doesn't consider system parameters like RAM, sound card/dvd drive/screen/keyboard specs. But what does it exactly consist in? Does it just have to do with the motherboard?

Thanks!

ArcGIS License Manager Upgrade from v10.1 to v10.2

To All ArcGIS Concurrent License Users:

I would like to upgrade my License Manager (LM) from v10.1 to v10.2. The instructions appear to be very simple, so I just want to confirm that the installation of the v10.2 LM software will automatically uninstall LM v10.1, as opposed to me manually uninstalling LM v10.1 before I start the install of LM v10.2.

Unchecking create features using templates removes Edit Vertices toolbar in my 10.2

I noticed that if I used the Advanced Settings Utility in 10.2 to turn off Create features using templates, I lose the Edit Vertices toolbar; totally. I don't have the option to turn it off or on in the list of toolbars. If I then check the Create features box the toolbar returns. I ran a Repair install and there's no change. That's an odd combo.

COMMENT: ArcGIS 10.2 and ArcInfo Workstation (works without uninstall)

This is just based on my experience on on machine (Win 7, 64-bit) and is probably not a supported install.

I had ArcGIS (Desktop) 10.1 and ArcInfo Workstation (10.0) installed and working on this machine already. Even though the 102UninstallUtility.exe said I need to uninstall Workstation prior to the 10.2 install, I decided to ignore it and went ahead with the upgrade.

Although it may come back to bite my at some point in the future, everything seems to be working at this point. Workstation recogonized my 10.2 license manager (LM) right off.

Desktop Administrator also was able to see the LM and available licenses right away, but when start up ArcCatalog and/or ArcMap it did not. I borrowed/checkout a license and was able to start up both. I checked the license back in and Catalog and Map both started ok....so the error might have been a fluke. BTW - I use a port for the firewall issues. If you do too, don't forget to update your service.txt in the 10.2 license manager bin folder.

Since the Desktop/Workstation discussion seems to come up eventually with every new release, I thought I would put in my two cents to start the discussion.....or if others are just wondering.

Install Desktop 10.2 silently

According to the Installation Guide, 10.2 can be installed manually without uninstalling 10.1.
But the instructions for silent installation say "All previous versions must be uninstalled before you proceed with the silent installation". Why? Has anyone tried the Silent Install without uninstalling 10.1?

Hi, I downloaded the trial about a month ago, and never really got around to installing it on my MacBook (using bootcamp). I get this error when I try to run ArcMap v10.1:

I can't change anything in arc administrator for some reason and I would assume that's where I would need to be

Hi, I just installed ArcGIS for Desktop 10.2 and I noticed my toolbars and menus are not there. Any suggestions?

I installed 10.2 on top of my 10.1, allowing the installation to remove the old software. I'm running Windows XP.

Using Multiple Seat Concurrent Licenses

I have a license from ESRI for 10 "authorizations" for a concurrent license of ArcGIS for Desktop. How do I set things up so that I can make use of all 10 at a time?

I tried doing a normal authorization and set up the license manager as such but it only shows 1 available license of ArcMap and the ESRI website shows 9 authorizations remaining.

I have a suspicion that I'm doing something wrong because I can't imagine a big company spending hours manually authorizing all their ESRI concurrent licenses.

Basic System Context:

- Clients on Windows 7 and 8
- Server running Windows Server 2008R2
- ArcGIS____ [for ______] version 10.1 (fill in the blank with the names of all the different ESRI products)

ArcMap 10.2 Does not cleanup aliases after a join

When you join a table to a featureclass the alias names get fully qualified prefixes, which is a good idea, especially for duplicate field names.

However when you remove the join, not all the aliases revert to unqualified, resulting in new commands failing to recognise the original fields. I tried closing the table and re-opening to no avail.

Workaround: Go into the properties and edit the alias by hand.

ArcMap 10 ser.pack 5: folder connections not visible/lost

Hi all,

I have a problem with folder connections in ArcMap 10. When I connect to folders, I can see the folders as long as I keep ArcMap open. But after closing and reopening ArcMap the folder connections are lost in ArcMap.

I defined also some folder connections via ArcCatalog and these are not lost in ArcCatalog, only in ArcMap...

Does anyone have an idea how I could get the folder connections saved/visible in ArcMap?

Many thanks in advance.

J.

10.2 License Manager Ports

I've set up a new server (Server 2012) with the 10.2 version of License Manager. I have created a firewall rule to allow TCP 27000-27009. From what I have read and what I remember doing with past versions, that should be all I have to do.

Now, if I open ArcGIS Administrator on a client computer and try to specify the License Manager, I receiver the error "<server> does not have a valid License Manager. Please enter a valid License Manager Server." Checking the firewall logs on the server, I see a TCP dropped connection attempt from my client to the server on port 57640. If I modify the firewall rule that I created, to also allow TCP 57640, then everything works fine. I've searched the internet and found no reference to 57640 so I'm wondering what's going on?

9.3 and 10.0 License question

$

In my organization we have two separate ESRI accounts and two separate licenses. My division is on a 10.0 license and the other one is still using 9.3. We've had a number of problems with the machine that hosts the 9.3 license and it has been asked if I can put their 9.3 license on my 10.0 license manager and then have them point their software to my license manager. I've tried to look online but the searches got flooded in posts and articles about using a 10.0 manager to host a 9.3 license but nothing about if a 10.0 manager can host both a 10.0 and a 9.3 license at the same time. Is this possible or would it be better to go and put the 9.3 manager on a different server for them?

ArcMap 10.2 + possible SQL Server interference

$

So like most of you, I got an e-mail from ESRI saying the new ArcMap 10.2 was released with a lot of fixes. Never really had just a huge problem with 10/10.1 besides a few random glitches but I like to stay current so I downloaded the new version. Get to install 10.2 on top of 10.1 without the whole uninstall prior version - check. Worked fine. Updated the License Manager - caught a few snags there due to running the "License Server" on the same workstation that I run ArcMap on and how our network is setup but got thru that and was good to go. Or so I thought.

First time loading up 10.2 it froze on me so I had to Ctrl+Alt+Del and end the process. After that when I would try to open the program I kept getting some kind of .NET Framework error but that would disappear too quickly to actually read and the program would shut down. Reboot the computer - still doesn't work. Reinstalled .NET Framework 3.5 - still doesn't work. Completely uninstalled every version of .NET Framework and only installed the 3.5 version from ESRI's website - still doesn't work. Same .NET Framework error that I can't mange to read before it disappears. Finally get fed up and uninstalled ArcMap 10.2 and did a fresh install. Boom. Got ArcMap 10.2 working!

That's the good news. ArcMap 10.2 works. BUT! Here is my problem (and work around - not so much a fix) - I also use an appraisal software on this same workstation that I have to use as a part of my job. After installing ArcMap 10.2 the appraisal software starts acting up. Try to print from the appraisal software would result in an error saying "[Microsoft][ODBC Service Manager] No default driver specified and no file name" or something similar to that. As well as when I actually tried to work in the appraisal software - I would have to reconfirm what database it should be using after every single change. Very annoying. I'm thinking I messed something up by uninstalling/reinstalling all those .NET Frameworks so I try uninstalling/reinstalling the appraisal software. Doesn't work. I spend an entire day rebooting/uninstalling/reinstalling and playing with different configurations of the appraisal software and the .NET Framework but nothing works. Finally I swallow my pride and call for help with the people who provide my office with our appraisal software and they know exactly what is going on as several of their clients have called with this same issue.

ArcCatalog 10.2 is the culprit.

That's right. For some reason ArcCatalog 10.2 is interferring with my SQL Server connection for a completely seperate program.

So I was advised by our appraisal software provider to uninstall just the ArcCatalog part of ArcGIS - of course its not that simple for me and I end up having to completely uninstall the entire ArcMap 10.2 then do a custom install leaving out the ArcCatalog. Guess what. Everything works now. Of course - as I said above - this is just a "work around" as you no longer have ArcCatalog and that can be a fairly useful tool when needed. Not a fix - I know but personally I rarely need the ArcCatalog so for now atleast I can get back to work. Hope this information helps any others with similar problems and that ESRI can fix their ArcCatalog from interferring with other programs connections to a SQL Server database.

FYI - my workstation is still running a 32-bit version of Windows XP while our server is 64-bit. Don't know if that makes any difference here but while trying to Google a fix on the [ODBC Service Manager] issue that seemed to be a common thread.

Resetting your ArcGIS application profile

$

When ArcGIS applications fail, or are behaving strangely, one of the first things to try is to reset your application template document (ArcMap's is "Normal.mxt") or the entire ArcGIS application profile. This resolves many problems with ArcGIS software.

It's a good idea to do this as a every few months, or whenever a service pack or update is applied to ArcGIS, as these template files gradually fill with cruft and slow down your ArcGIS Desktop applications.

The following is adapted from KB 32797: Error: ArcMap.exe has encountered an error and needs to close

1. Close all ArcGIS Desktop applications. This may include looking for any "headless" applications using the Task Manager.

2. Start Windows Explorer and open your application profile.

The location of the user profile depends on the operating system:

- XP/2003/2000: C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\ESRI
- Vista/7/2008: C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\ESRI
- The Application Data or AppData folder is hidden by default. If this folder is not visible, navigate to Tools > Folder Options > View tab, and select the option to show hidden files and folders.
- The easiest way to get there is to just type the environment variable %APPDATA% into the Windows Explorer, which will take you directly to the folder that contains the application profile folder "ESRI", regardless of Windows version.

3. Browse within the ESRI folder and find the component of ArcGIS, ArcCatalog or ArcMap that is generating the error message.

4. Each component of the software has a template that stores settings and customizations for that part of ArcGIS. These are:

ArcCatalog: ESRI\DesktopXX.X\ArcCatalog\Normal.gxt
ArcMap: ESRI\DesktopXX.X\ArcMap\Templates\Normal.mxt
ArcToolbox window: ESRI\DesktopXX.X\ArcToolbox.dat

5. Rename the file (for example, Normal.mxt -> Normal_old.gxt). When that component of ArcGIS is started again, a new, fresh template is created. Note that some your customizations (buttons, file connections) may have to be re-applied.

10.2 and connection to arcgis.com

$

Hello,

We just upgraded our ArcGIS desktop to 10.2 and we have an arcgis.com for Organization.

It is possible to connect from ArcCatalog to arcgis.com using the sign in system (which is prompting every 5 seconds btw and is harrassing).

Working fine if you use your normal esri account.

Problem is: we migrated the connection properties from esri build in to our ldap.
And the sign in system from ArcCatalog does not recognize (or know that). So when i try to log in, of course it wont work (even if i try with the usermame self created by esri when registering my ldap account).

My question: How or where can I set up ArcGIS to tell him to go to my organiaztion (and not the general arcgis.com) or how can i log in using my ldap?
