How to Deautherise and re-autherise to transfer a desktop license
Apologies in I'm sure this has been raised before, but I've not found it.
I want to take a 10.1 license from an unused desktop and add it to my machine which had a 10.1 demo version on it which has just had the license run out.
I understand you need to Deauthorise it to remove it from the original machine, but I've not been able to find instructions of how its done.
Any instructions greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Neil

Data Execution Prevention on Windows Vista, Installing ArcGIS 10.1
I am trying to install ArcGIS 10.1 educational edition on my laptop, but every time I try to run setup, it abruptly stops due to DEP. I have tried to add setup as a DEP-allowed program but Windows itself does not let me, telling me that it cannot be added as an execption.

License broken after swapping motherboard and processor
I have a student version of ArcGIS for Desktop which includes a one-year authorization. My computer recently had some "trouble" after a power surge blew up the power supply and motherboard. After three weeks of repair time I finally have it back, but fixing it meant swapping in a motherboard and CPU. I suspect that this has changed the Machine ID and made my license invalid. When I try to start up any Arc software I get the message "The ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced license is in need of a repair operation. Please access the ArcGIS Administrator to repair your licenses."
When I open Arc Administrator and run the "Authorize Now.." utility it says everything is already authorized. The Availability list, however, shows that all installed products are "untrusted". I also tried deathorizing the machine to hopefully reauthorize it, but when I try to deathorize it says that there are no single-use licenses to deauthorize on this machine.
Any ideas on how to repair my license?
thanks.

Printer issues ArcGIS 10.1 SP1
Hi
A few months ago, we migrated to ArcGIS 10.1 SP1, and since then we´ve been having several and (random) issues.
But I think it´s better if we go one at a time
In this case:
• Printing issues: When the user wants to plot a file, ArcGIS only detects one type of paper format, or it crashes when trying to plot, other times it just freezes for around 30 seconds to 1 minute for the software to respond, even then the user can´t print, please refer to the below image.
Attachment 25798
The printer is a Hp Designjet 7100, could this be an issue with the printer?, sometimes it only shows that type of paper. regretably it not happening on one machine, it happens randomly in the machines of the GIS users,
The computers are al running:
Windows 7 Enterprise x64
Updates being managed by WSUS.
so far, the only solution we´ve been doing for this, is recreate the user´s profile. (obviously this isnt a good workaround, since the user profile sometimes could be very large, about +100GB)
Please if you need further info, please let me know about this.
Cheers.-

Adding data via ArcCatalog
Please forgive my forum decorum, I'm new here, this is my first post and I'm probably not asking in the right place. I have ArcGis 9.3 which I realize is outdated but it is what my company offers. This morning my machine was upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise and after reloading my software I find that I am unable to "Add data" to any map. I click on the Add Data button, it opens a directory with the ArcCatalog. I navigate to the C drive and I am immediately kicked out of the entire program.
I opened ArcCatalog separately, and the same thing happened when navigating to any local drive. Perhaps as a work around is there a way to save my data directly to the Catalog prior to opening the software?
Again, please forgive me if I've asked for assistance in the wrong place, I'll take general correction and redirection.

Using ArcEditor and ArcView licenses on the same computer
Hi there
Are ArcMap licenses per open instance of ArcMap or per computer machine? From today’s experience I believe it must be the former.
If it is the former, is there any way of having ArcEditor and ArcView licenses in use on the same PC? So one session might be an editor session and the other five sessions view sessions
I'm currently working on multiple maps and as a result need multiple MXDs open because ArcMap currently does not support multiple layout windows, although the idea is under consideration by ESRI.
My organisation has four ArcEditor licenses and even more ArcView licenses. In the license manager I am set up as an editor.
I found today that whenever I tried to have any more than three MXDs open at any one time, they would open and then quit out without any error message what so ever. I assume something else had ArcMap open and I was exceeding the ArcEditor license restriction. Interestingly though if I had two MXDs open and opened a third it would work but if from Windows Explorer I opened two MXDs, whilst having two already open, both would open and then quit, even though technically there was one license free.
If I could have multiple license types then I could do edits in one file with an ArcEditor license and do all the layout work for each location in question with an ArcView license. I am working in 10.0 SP4.

ArcGIS Engine upgrade from 10.0 to 10.1
As far as I can see, to upgrade standalone ArcGIS Desktop, it is:
1) uninstall 10.0 (without deregistering)
2) install 10.1
3) when prompted to upgrade license, click yes and go thru tool
Is it the same 3 steps when it is ArcGIS Engine rather than Desktop?
Also, if you can answer early... will it be the same for 10.0/10.1 to 10.2?

This week I got an error message telling me that I didn't have a license to use the spatial analyst tools. I'd love to get this issue resolved quickly. any ideas?

Is there a way to add new file types for all users?
In ArcCatalog, you can make other file types visible on top of the standard ones. In my case, I want to be able to see GPS exchange files (*.gpx). While adding it in yourself is fine, I have written a GPX > GPS conversion tool using the Python Addins module to aid beginner users in getting their GPS data into GIS*. Requiring them to manually add the GPX file type so that it is visible in the 'add data' dialogue box is a moderately tedious process and kind of defeats the purpose of having an 'easy to use' tool.
So can anyone tell me:
a) if there is anyway to programatically make a new file type visible on a users profile? (even if part of a new ArcGIS installation?)
or b) where that particular customisation is stored on the users windows profile/registry so I can try to find other ways off adding it to lots of users in an enterprise. I've looked in the usual places in C:\Documents and Settings but nothing sticks out....perhaps it isn't in a 'open' format?
*which I wouldn't need to do if ESRI just supported USB connections to GPS units in the first place...but let's not go there.
Thank you :)

ArcMap folder(and normal.mxd template) not created in App.Data folder crashes ArcMap
Hello!
Having made a recent installation fo ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop on a machine (Windows 8), I've realized that everytime i try to open ArcMap it crashes on the "loading document" part. ArcCatalog opens and works normally though. Browsing to the Appdata folder:
C:\Users\<user name>\Application Data\Roaming\Esri\Desktop10.1\
I've realized there is only the ArcCatalog folder, not having any ArcMap folder (that should contain the Templates folder with the Normal.mxd) or any other folders.
I've already deleted all that is inside this AppData Esri folder and in the Documents\ArcGIS folder, renamed the Hkey_Current_User\Software\Esri registry entry to EsriOld, and tryed to open again the ArcMap Application, and I all get is the same folders created, except the ones I mentioned to be missing.
I already copied from other ArcGIS computer (same version) an Arcmap folder with the Templates (normal.mxd) and manually pasted in that location, but it didn't worked. Installed ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Service Pack 1 on top of it and it stays the same.
Any ideas of what could be causing this? Any help would be appreciated. :)
Cheers,
António

Opening a map document that uses an enterprise database
I have a map file (MXD) that refers to data stored in an "Enterprise Database" (formerly known as ArcSDE and, in reality, living in a computer running SQL Server). Whenever I open it, ArcMap hangs for a long time. ArcMap is also quite slow when I try to pan or zoom.
I found a knowledge base article (http://support.esri.com/fr/knowledge...s/detail/17650) but I'm not sure how to tell if that's actually the problem. And, even if it is, then what permissions do I need to give the SQL Server user account on the SDE database?

License manager authorization
We are having issues completing authorization of our 10.1 Desktop licenses and I wanted to see if anyone else has had the same or similar problem.
Let me start by saying we our deploying all of our software on an enclosed network, which cannot communicate with ESRI sites. So our license manager, etc. cannot communicate/authorize directly with ESRI sites, everything must be done via file transfer. We are trying to standup our license manager on the same server that maintains our 10.1 Server install. We had some issues with server, but eventually go that working, however there seems to be issues with authoring our desktop software.
I've installed license manager and I've used the authorize now button and it creates an authorization file for concurrent license files. However when we migrate the file and upload it to the https://service.esri.com/drm site we consistently recieve an error message. Now I have tried to resolve this issue multiple ways.
We have attempted to create our authorization file multiple ways.
1. Creating the authorization file manually by inputting the license numbers we are requesting(ABC123456789).
2. We have created an .prvs file from our customer care portal and uploaded that to licenses manager to read.
3. I've also tried uninstalling and re-installing licenses manger multiple times.
Now the only positive is that I noticed our licenses on our customer care portal did change when I uploaded our authorization file, as if the site read the read the requests for licenses and it now says that they are being used. However the site never generated a final license file for us to use. So the customer care portal says we are using software, but I have no license files or software.
I have been in contact with ESRI support on this issue and they have worked with me. But I really have no resolution at this point. The only guidance I have is that it seems as if license manager isnt completing the authorization file completely. ESRI support said the authorization.txt file doesnt seem long enough and isnt adding the specific machine information for where the license manager is residing.
Not sure if this is or if so its occuring because of specific server restrictions or if there is specific software you cant have installed with license manager that might prevent it from completing the authorization file. But we are running Windows Server 2008 R2, SP1. 64 BIT OS.
Just wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with this issue and can offer some guidance.
Thanks,
