ArcGIS 10.1 evaluation license authorization problems

I purchased an ArcGIS 10.1 workbook and installed ArcGIS Desktop on my computer. I've been having trouble getting ArcMap and the other programs to run, however. I authorized the license through ArcGIS Administrator for Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use, which is what the instructions I received in my email said to do. However, when I try to open ArcMap, I get the message, "ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced is not authorized for use. Access the ArcGIS Administrator. Click on the product folder on the left (e.g. Desktop), then select the Single Use product you will be using and click the Authorize Now button. If you have already received an authorization file from ESRI, choose the third option 'I have received an authorization file from ESRI and am now ready to finish the authorization process'."

I tried following the instructions - even though I had already done that - and the authorization failed with the error: "Authorization denied because the request would have exceeded max copies for the following authorization number(s):". I searched the forums for an answer, and a solution that seemed to work for a lot of people was to change their license to a different one (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView). I tried toggling between them and applying the changes, but I got the same error message I got originally when opening ArcMap, but instead of saying that "Desktop Advanced" was not authorized it changed to "Standard" and "Basic" correspondingly.

I have no idea why my license isn't authorized or what else to try. I'm hesitant to deauthorize and reauthorize the license since mine is only for a single use and the "max copies" are already exceeded and I'm not sure if it's a one install/authorize and it's gone forever deal.

One thing that might have had an impact is that I opened the License Server Administrator and tried to authorize it there instead of ArcGIS Administrator because I didn't read carefully enough (so I did try to authorize my version as a concurrent license first). I'm not sure that this would have an effect, because when I opened the ArcGIS Administrator I was able to authorize the license for the Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use.

I do also have the .NET Framework 4.5.1 installed instead of 3.5 - I don't know if that makes a difference.

I'm running Windows 7, SP1 on a Compaq Presario CQ56
(Processor: Intel Celeron CPU 900 @ 2.20GHz 2.19Ghz
RAM: 2.00GB
System type: 64-bit Operating System)

Thanks in advance for the help.
